The challenge

Cron expressions drive scheduling all over Splunk, but they're opaque and easy to get wrong. Confirming when a job actually runs usually means guesswork or an external tool.

The approach

I built SA-getcron, a Splunk app providing custom search commands that validate a cron expression, translate it into a human-readable format, and calculate its previous and next execution times — all from within SPL.

The result

Splunk admins can reason about schedules with confidence and catch misconfigured cron expressions before they cause missed or duplicate runs.
